A little while ago, during a heated debate on the best movies that have ever existed, I called upon my blog to back me up on my cinematic tastes and their merits, but upon investigation of the dusty old blog that I hadn't touched in nearly a year, we realised that although I had done my 'Top 20 songs of all time' (which only helped showcase my good taste really!), I'd never gotten around to doing the other top 10's that I'd meant to do.
So I felt that a year was a long enough time to have finally nailed down the actual order of my cinematic favourites...
I was wrong.
It has taken a long night of careful contemplation, rearranging and research to finally put all this together.
Now, let it be know that I don't leave things unfinished! I get around to doing them.... d'reckly.
10) The
Lord of The rings – The Two Towers
I used to watch one of these movies every Saturday on tape,
but my favourite one was always The Two Towers, because I just really liked the
Ents. These days I think I prefer the first film, because I also really like
the Balrog scene, but as an all time favourite, I still retain this affection
for The Two Towers, because I like trees man. I like trees and tiny people.
9) Burlesque
Ahh, Burlesque – my guilty pleasure. There are many people who may be wondering how this could have beaten LOTR. I just love Cher guys, I can’t even explain why. I think she’s
gorgeous and has a great voice, and her character here is exactly the woman I
wanted to be – a sassy owner of a gritty downtown burlesque bar, who doesn’t
want that?
It's a feel-good story with sexy ladies and a happy ending.
LOTR is not.
I know, I know, I'm sorry!
8) Saw
A bone of contention for some. I remember first
watching this movie when I was a little too young and being totally gripped. I
was mostly unaffected by horror movies and gore when I was younger, but I found
this movie totally thrilling and intense, and loved most of the franchise up
until about number 4 or 5, but I still watch them for comedy factor. I love the
twisting plot that follows right the way through the whole thing, but the first
one was the best – the content made in just that one room was absolutely
capturing and thrilling, and so well thought out, shot and made
(I don't think we need any clips for this one - Agreed?)
7) Highlander
I must have been born in the
wrong decade – soundtrack by Queen, epic fights, naff prizes and effects and
did I mention the epic fights?
Apparently you can't find any clips of those epic fights though - Bummer!
6) The
Lost Boys
Another 80’s great (no seriously, I was born too late), with
a great soundtrack and gorgeous actors – all that leather and bikes and
clueless teen nerds trying to battle bad-boy vampires – what’s not to love?
Oh, and killer sax action.
Classic tunes all round in this one...
5) Alien
The truest horror film there ever was, with all the fun of
sci-fi for good measure. While I love most of the franchise, and it is a close
contender with Aliens, the first film has to be my favourite, because it’s the
original (although I really like 3 too, so it’s hard!). The effects stand so
true that it’s impressive, and it is a whole lot scarier than anything they
bring out on the horror market today.
(Apparently youtube can't find me any scenes from the movie? Sucky!)
4) Chicago
I love Chicago ,
because I guess I’m just a sucker for a musical – the lights, the glamour, the
soundtrack, the gorgeous ladies. It’s a classy piece of work. I love the production value as well.
Also, I always wanted to be a mama hen.
I mean, those costumes....
3) The
Breakfast Club
This is probably *the* coming of age movie – if you haven’t
seen it you should! It should really be mandatory teen viewing. This movie uses
a teeny cast, one building, a few classic tunes, a hilarious and sometimes heart-breaking script, and teen orientated themes to
convey a beautiful message of unity despite the superficial labels society
places upon us. Everybody needs to see this film!
2) Labyrinth
This 80’s glitter-fest is a thing to behold (a not just
because of David Bowie's crotch bulge… okay, maybe mostly because of that!). The
spoiled brat, the amazing scenery, the production rule “if in doubt, add more
glitter!”, and the bop-along soundtrack just make this one of the feel good
movies of my life.
I am exhausted from living up to your expectations...
And finally, anyone who knows me will already know what's coming....
DRUM ROLL PLEASE...
*drum roll*
1) The Rocky Horror Picture Show!
Some things will never change, just like this
film will always be my absolute favourite thing to ever happen! As today, the
influence for my posts is inspiration and change; this is the most inspiring
thing that ever happened to me. This film was my coming of age film – the very
thing that has defined my slow growth to the woman I have become today. It
taught me that there is no shame in being proud of who you are, in owning your
sexuality and sensuality, and that being a freak, doesn’t mean you can’t be
accepted.(And obviously it has sexy Tim Curry all over it!)
Don't dream it... Be it!
Apologies for subtitles - this video insert gadget don't work too well!
So there you have it - my top 10.
Please feel free to take on the challenge yourself, or comment with your favourites.
You can even argue your case for an order change, but I'll warn you, nothing will beat the top spot in my world.
